Is this effective to protect grapes from birds? If so, how many for what amount of space?
Yes. The effectiveness will depend on the type of birds that you are attempting to scare away. In general, birds that flock together and migrate are the easiest to scare away, while a single bird like a mockingbird is more domesticated and is a little more difficult to frighten. That said, many grape farmers purchase the electric models which are the 8' Scarecrow, 10' Clown, and the 15' Snake units. Some use generators where electricity is not available. Spacing is difficult to determine without knowing more details. You are welcome to call us for help designing the units for your needs.

What is the distance and the angle of detection for the motion detector ?
The distance is about 20-25 ft at a 45 degree angle. To test the sensor you can walk through the zone and adjust as needed.

What are the timer settings? Is the motion detection sensitive enough for small birds like starlings?
The timer settings are at the discretion of the user. There are 28 on/off settings in a 24 hour period. We would not recommend the use of a motion detector for small birds because your results may be unpredictable.
